Mayor: $20M grant is ‘tremendous investment’ in San Angelo, Goodfellow

SAN ANGELO, TX — The city of San Angelo has been awarded a $20 million U.S. Department of Defense grant to help pay for a $28.6 million transportation and utility project on Christoval Road along the south side of Goodfellow Air Force Base. 

The funding comes through the Defense Community Infrastructure Program and will support work from Paint Rock Road to South Chadbourne Street. Officials said the project will improve mobility, safety, utilities and access around the base while complementing Texas Department of Transportation upgrades along the corridor. The roadway was identified as a priority in the city’s 2015 pavement condition study. 

Mayor Tom Thompson on Thursday thanked U.S. Rep. August Pfluger, R-Texas, Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, Goodfellow leadership and city staff for the award.

“This is a tremendous investment in San Angelo, but just as importantly, it is an investment in Goodfellow Air Force Base and its national defense mission,” Thompson stated. “On behalf of the city of San Angelo, I want to personally thank Congressman August Pfluger and Senator Ted Cruz for their continued advocacy for Goodfellow and our community.”

Thompson also credited Col. Matthew Norton and the 17th Training Wing.

“Goodfellow and San Angelo have always been one community,” Thompson stated. “Colonel Norton and the entire Goodfellow command understand that investments outside the fence can be just as important to mission readiness as investments inside the fence. Christoval Road serves our airmen, students, civilian employees, families, businesses and residents every day.”

Thompson praised City Manager Phillip Urrutia and city staff for the planning and coordination required to win the competitive grant.

“These grants do not simply happen,” Thompson stated. “They require months and often years of planning, coordination and relationship building.”

Since 2022, San Angelo has secured more than $60 million in state and federal grants for transportation safety, pedestrian projects, boating access, infrastructure and long-range planning, city officials said.

“The $20 million Christoval Road award demonstrates what San Angelo can accomplish when local, state, federal and military partners work toward the same goal,” Thompson stated. “We will continue advocating for Goodfellow, investing in the infrastructure that supports its mission and doing everything we can to ensure Goodfellow remains an essential part of America’s national defense for generations to come.”
