Tom Green County Sheriff Warns of Phone Scam Impersonating Deputies

SAN ANGELO, TX -- Scammers are at it again. Individuals are calling and falsely identifying themselves as members of the sheriff's office and/or bail bondsmen.

These scammers can sound very convincing, the sheriff's office stated. They may even have personal information such as full names, date of birth, or other identifying details in an attempt to make the call sound legitimate.

The caller will often claim that you have:

  • Missed jury duty
  • Failed to appear in court
  • Owe fines or fees
  • Have family members currently in jail and they can get them out
  • Have a warrant

They will then demand immediate payment, often requesting money through Bitcoin, gift cards, or other non-traditional methods.

"THIS IS A SCAM!!!," the office stated. "Tom Green County Sheriff's Office will NEVER call you to demand payment over the phone or threaten arrest for failure to pay over the phone."

If you receive these calls:

  • Do NOT send money
  • Hang up IMMEDIATELY
  • Do NOT provide personal or financial information

If you are unsure whether a call is legitimate, contact the Tom Green County Sheriff's Office directly at 325-655-8111.

"We urge everyone to check on elderly family members, friends, and neighbors who are often targeted in these scams," the department stated. "Please help us spread the word by sharing this information."
