Watch the Tamale Eating Contest in All of Its Glory
SAN ANGELO, TX — The Tamale Fest is underway at the Pop Art Museum, 125 W. Twohig Ave., where crowds gathered this afternoon to watch the annual tamale-eating contest.
Contestants faced off to see who could down the most tamales in the shortest time.
The contest marked the start of Saturday’s entertainment lineup, which continues through the afternoon with DJ Mirage performing at 1 p.m., the “big head” performers taking the stage at 2 p.m., and Mariachi Los Caciques closing out the day at 4 p.m.
More than 40 vendors are set up along Twohig Avenue offering local food, crafts and art, while five tamale vendors are competing later in the cook-off for top honors in four categories, including best authentic tamale and people’s choice.
Tamale Fest runs until 6:30 p.m., and admission is free to the public.
Guests can also purchase a $35 “VIP passport” for a sample from each tamale vendor and a commemorative T-shirt.
