Former San Angelo Football Coach Takes Top Job at Hamlin

HAMLIN, TX – The Hamlin Pied Pipers have found their next Athletic Director/Head Football Coach.

Chris Evans has been introduced as the next AD/Head Football Coach at Hamlin High School.

According to information released by the Hamlin ISD, Evans, who left the same position at Wheeler, led the Mustangs to a 33-16 overall record the past four years and made it to the postseason every year.

Before Evans ended up at Wheeler High, he was an assistant at San Angelo Lake View.

Last season, Hamlin went 11-1 overall and 4-0 in district play. The Pied Pipers are on a tear right now with a 12-year playoff run appearing in the state championship in 2019.

“What a blessing it is to join a community that has the rich tradition, much like Wheeler has. There are some good hard working kids (in Hamlin).” Evans said.

Location and family played a big part in Evans’ choice as well. His parents live in San Angelo and his in-laws live in Lamesa. Evans has 3 children and the move to Hamlin will cut driving down for the grandparents.

Evans also talked to former Hamlin head coach Russell Lucas about the job when Lucas left the position.

“I think it says something that I’m lucky enough to get to go to a school with the tradition and success that Hamlin’s had.” Evans said.

Russell Lucas left Hamlin for Sweetwater in March.
