Super Bowl Preview: Them Eagles Ain't Cowboys

GLENDALE, AZ — The NFL 2022 Season is almost at an end, and the Championship matchup for the Super Bowl is here. The Kansas City Chiefs battle the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday, Feb. 12, at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona. Kickoff is at 5:30 p.m.

KANSAS CITY CHIEFS

After another successful season in what could quickly become the next NFL dynasty, the Chiefs are in their third Super Bowl in four years. While speaking with FOX Sports’ Jay Glazer at Super Bowl 57 media day on Monday night, Reid talked about facing off against the Eagles, the team that fired him after the 2012 season.

“It’s a great organization. I’ve had 14 years there, and I loved every minute of it,” said Reid. “I’ve been ten years at Kansas City, loved every minute of that. I’m proud of some of these old guys for the Eagles. I’m proud of my guys for the Chiefs. Let’s go.”

The Chiefs enter Super Bowl 57 with a hobbled star quarterback at the helm. Patrick Mahomes injured his ankle in the divisional round against the Jaguars back in January, and Mahomes looked pained throughout the NFC Championship game against the 49ers two weeks ago.

Mahomes addressed his ankle injury concerns at the Super Bowl media day on Monday. “It is great,” Mahomes said.

“It’s definitely better. You never know exactly until you get to the game, obviously, but it’s definitely in a better position than it was at this time before the last game. We’ll keep pushing it but not doing too much ’cause you don’t want to have any setbacks, but I haven’t had any since the game, at least.”

Mahomes received an additional two weeks of treatment for the high-ankle sprain and expects to play at a high level in the Super Bowl. Vegas lists the Chiefs as 1.5-point underdogs coming into the Super Bowl, so they need a healthy Mahomes to keep the Chief’s explosive offense humming.

The Chiefs average 416 yards per game and sport the NFL’s top-ranked offense. Expect a high-scoring game, as neither defense should pitch a shutout.

PHILADELPHIA EAGLES

The Philadelphia Eagles return to the title game for the first time since their title run in 2017. Eagles’ second-year head coach Nick Sirriani spoke to the media ahead of the matchup with the Chiefs. One reporter actually asked Sirriani if the Super Bowl, the Championship game, was a “must-win” game for the Eagles.

Sirianni answered in the most appropriate way possible. A blank stare and a one-word answer. “Yes,” he said.

Quarterback Jalen Hurts leads the third-ranked offense at 389 yards per game into the championship, averaging 28.7 points per game. The Eagles and the Chiefs tie for the most points scored per game this season. Ultimately, the winner will emerge from whichever team’s defense creates takeaways.

The Eagles' defense has the fourth-best defensive line in sacks (29) and the best passing defense in the league (171.1 yards per game). If the Eagles want to win the Super Bowl, it is up to their defensive line to make a hobbled Patrick Mahomes uncomfortable in the pocket. The secondary can take advantage of any mistakes he makes after that.
