Stung and Done: Lady Hornets Finish Out 2023 with Win over Mason

 

MERTZON— The Irion County Lady Hornets snagged a win over the Mason Lady Punchers in the Billy Barnett Holiday Hoops Classic, 42-37.

The Lady Hornets closed out the 2023 year with a big win over the Lady Punchers. The expectations are very high with this group of girls from Irion County who were in the state tournament last season. The Lady Hornets stayed focus after being down 16-12 after one and went into halftime up 25-22. The third quarter was low scoring and both teams only scored five points but that was enough to keep the Lady Hornets out in front. Irion County closed out the game with a 12-point fourth quarter as Mason put up 10 in the final frame.

Opening things up Melanie Rainey, who played lights out, hit a three-point shot and a two pointer. Her younger sister, sophomore Baylee Rainey and fellow senior Zoe Baumann each made a two-point contributions and junior Acelyn Fowler hit a two-pointer and made one free throw.

The Lady Punchers hit stride right away behind a big quarter from junior Scout Magnus, who hit two free throws and two three-point shots. Senior Avery Burns and senior Lucy Rochat each hit three-point shots and sophomore Maya Aguero hit a two-point shot.

Mason ended the first quarter up, 16-12.

Into the second quarter, the Lady Puncher’s Burns hit another three while Aguero hit a two-pointer. Magnus continued to add points but only added one in before the half. The Lady Hornets turned it on as Melanie Rainey had one free throw and two two-point shots made, junior Berkley Callaway made a free throw, and Fowler made two two-pointers. Sophomore Presli Cormier hit a three-point shot before going in for the half, which the Lady Hornets were leading, 25-22.

Melanie came out after the half and hit a three-point shot while Callaway hit two free throws. The Lady Puncher’s Rochat scored all five of the points Mason added to the board in the third quarter. The Lady Hornets finished the quarter still ahead by three, 30-27.

Into the final quarter, Mason’s younger Burns, Ainsley, hit a three-point shot and was matched by Aguero. Magnus sank two two-pointers for the Lady Puncher’s 10 points in the fourth. The Sisters Rainey combined for five points while Fowler added four points and Callaway sank a three.

The Lady Hornets of Irion County finished out the game with the victory over the Mason Lady Punchers, 42-37. The Lady Hornets will face the Brady Lady Bulldogs on January 2, 2024, and the Lady Punchers face the Center Point on January 6, 2024, according to maxpreps.
