FOXBOROUGH, MA — A new chapter in New England is here as the Patriots named Jerod Mayo as the franchise's next head coach. First reported by ESPN's Adam Schefter, the Patriots plan to make the official announcement on Tuesday when they introduce Mayo as the head coach.
This news comes only a day after the franchise parted ways with legendary head coach Bill Belichick. Mayo, 37, will be the youngest head coach in the NFL—a title he takes away from Los Angeles Rams head coach Sean McVay.
Mayo is a former player for the New England Patriots. He was selected in the first round of the NFL Draft in 2008 out of Tennessee and played linebacker for New England until 2015. After his playing days ended, he joined the Patriots' coaching staff in 2019.

He was a former team captain on the Patriots' roster, and similarities between Mayo and Belichick have been observed since started coaching. Mayo played 105 games for the Patriots, his entire career, and totaled 905 tackles. Mayo was also a part of the New England team that won the Super Bowl in 2014.
Mayo may have massive shoes to fill since the departure of arguably the greatest NFL coach of all time, but he has the full support of the roster and the organization.
