Two Angelo State Rams Named to the Bevo Francis Top 100 Watchlist

KANSAS CITY, MO — The Angelo State Rams guards Kevon Godwin and Keyshawn Embery-Simpson were recently been named to the Bevo Francis Top 100 Watch List, announced on Monday by the National Awards Committee and Small College Basketball.

The Clarence "Bevo" Francis Award, an esteemed honor in Small College Basketball, recognizes the player with the most outstanding overall season. Evaluation criteria encompass season statistics, individual achievements, awards, personal character, and team achievements. This award is given annually and is presented to one player across Small College Basketball per season. Small college basketball encompasses Division II, Division III, NAIA, USCAA, and NCCAA basketball.

This marks the second time in Angelo State's history that the Rams have had a nominee for the Bevo Francis Award, with the first instance occurring in 2016 when Tre Bennett was named to the top 100.

Angelo State is one of eight programs and one of five Division II programs with more than one nominee, sharing this distinction with Lincoln Memorial, North Georgia, Central Oklahoma, Nova Southeastern, Lourdes, Langston, and Morningside.

Godwin and Embery-Simpson stand out as two of five nominees in the Lone Star Conference as well as two of six in the South Central Region to secure spots on the Bevo Francis Top 100 Watch List.

Godwin boasts impressive statistics, averaging 17.1 points per game. He ranks seventh in the LSC, shooting 45.3 percent from the field and 42.9 percent from three. He also holds the fourth position in the conference with 4.5 assists per game. Godwin, the LSC Preseason Player of the Year, garnered All-LSC First Team honors last season and received all-region accolades from the D2CCA and the NABC.

In his debut season at Angelo State, Embery-Simpson leads the team in scoring with 18.9 points per game. Noteworthy performances include a 30-point game against No. 15 Fort Lewis. Recognized as the LSC Offensive Player of the Week on December 18th, he averaged 18.5 points in a week where the Rams secured two victories.

As of February 15th, the Bevo Francis Watch List will be narrowed down to the Top 50 players, followed by the announcement of the Top 25 players on March 15th. The release date for the finalists and the Bevo Francis Award winner is yet to be determined, with more information expected in the coming months.
