Baltimore Ravens TE Saves Life During Medical Emergency in Airplane

BALTIMORE, MD — Baltimore Ravens tight end Mark Andrews, known not only for his prowess on the football field but also for advocating diabetes awareness, recently found himself in a real-life hero moment during a flight from his workplace to his home state of Arizona.

On Thursday, Andrews, a Type 1 diabetic, and a few medical professionals on the plane sprang into action to assist a woman experiencing a medical emergency. According to an account shared by Twitter user Andrew Springs (@NaturalSprings), Andrews and the medical team onboard worked collaboratively to address the urgent situation.

Springs recounted the incident, stating, "The doctor and nurse attending to her couldn’t find a strong pulse, her blood pressure was extremely low, and required oxygen to breathe. It was genuinely scary."

In a critical moment, Andrews, who has personal experience managing diabetes, took charge. Springs described, "A man in the aisle seat popped up, 'Could it be her blood sugar? I have a diabetic testing kit.' It was Ravens TE Mark Andrews. Andrews instructed the medical professionals (equal citizen heroes in this story) on using his test kit. Eventually, her heart rate stabilized."

The plane landed safely, and paramedics took over from there to ensure the woman received further medical attention. Andrews, recognizing the collaborative effort, confirmed the incident through a statement released by the Ravens' public relations department.

“In addition to the fast-acting flight attendants, the real heroes are the nurse and doctor who also happened to be on the plane. Thankfully, they could provide the woman the quick assistance she needed,” Andrews stated.

Beyond his achievements in football, Andrews has been a vocal advocate for diabetes awareness, using his platform to support others dealing with the condition. The Ravens' tight end, who hails from Scottsdale and attended Desert Mountain High School, has made significant contributions to the NFL, earning Pro Bowl honors three times and receiving First Team All-Pro recognition in 2021.

Andrews' actions during the mid-air medical emergency further highlight his commitment to making a positive impact both on and off the field.

The Baltimore Ravens finished their 2024 campaign with a loss against the Kansas City Chiefs 17-10.  The playoff game showcased vintage Patrick Mahomes, who picked apart the Baltimore defense with quick passes, with Travis Kelce on the other end of many of them. The Kansas City Chiefs will face the San Francisco 49ers in the 2024 Superbowl which will air on Sunday, February 11 at 6:30 P.M. at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas, Nevada.
