Bobcats Outlast Franklin; Claim a Bi-District Championship

ANDREWS, TX — The San Angelo Central Bobcats Basketball team traveled to Andrews on Tuesday, February 20, to face off with El Paso Franklin in the Bi-District Round of the 2023-24 High School Basketball Playoffs. The ‘Cats’ physicality dominated the Cougars inside all game and a smothering defense prevented a comeback as Central claimed a win in Round 1, 73-65.

TK Taylor put forth a dominant performance for the Bobcats on Tuesday night. The Cougars schemed around Kollin Allbright, which left Taylor plenty of opportunities to score. His 22 points led the Bobcats In a game where Central had to fend off more than one comeback attempt from El Paso Franklin. San Angelo LIVE!’s Ryan Chadwick caught up with Taylor after the ‘Cats big win to get his thoughts on his performance. Check out the interview below:

A solid start on defense saw the Bobcats with a 10-point lead after the first quarter. That 16-6 advantage was whittled down before halftime as the Cougars exploded from beyond the arc with five threes made in the second quarter alone. Central led at the half 33-28. Central impressed their will on the Cougars again in the 3rd quarter. The Bobcats outscored Franklin 19-13 through excellent shot selection from Trey Allen, Squeaky English, and Hayden Schmidt. However, Franklin made another comeback in the fourth quarter when the ‘Cats seemed all but certain to win.

Clutch free throw shooting ended up being the difference between another close loss like last season and a Bi-District Championship. Trey Allen, Kollin Allbright, Schmidt, Taylor, and English all made trips to the line in the fourth quarter. The ‘Cats did not miss a single free throw, and Central secured a 73-65 victory in Round 1.

The ‘Cats return to action in the Area Round this Friday, February 23, against the winner of Keller High and Weatherford. The game time and location are still to be determined.
