AUSTIN, TX — Menard’s Danni Ruiz brought home two gold medals to highlight the Concho Valley’s showing Saturday at the Class 1A state track meet.
Ruiz took first place in the 800-meter run in 2:17.32, winning the title by more than three seconds. The sophomore followed that up with a win in the 400 in a time of 59.64.
Veribest sophomore Chloe Becker also had a two-medal day with a gold in the 200 in 25.39, along with a silver in the 100 in 12.25.
Along with Mercy Ynostrosa’s third place in the discus (122-0), Veribest’s girls finished in eighth place in the team standings with 24 points.
Another Tom Green County school, Water Valley, had the best showing among the Concho Valley’s girls teams with a fourth-place finish.
The Lady Wildcats’ 4x200 relay team of Jayden Gomez, Addy Luna, Kaige Lange and Janaye Coston won the gold medal in 1:46.08, nearly a full second ahead of the field.
Those 20 points, along with eight more from Coston’s second-place finish in the long jump (16-8.25), propelled Water Valley to fourth in the team race.
Bronte’s Emalyn Bohensky also claimed a gold medal with her performance in the triple jump (35-4.5). The senior was sixth in the high jump.
Blackwell’s Kinley Cummings was second in the 800 and fifth in the 400.
Other top-six finishes from Concho Valley girls included Garden City’s Ella Braden taking third in the pole vault, and Irion County’s Baylee Rainey taking fifth in the 100 hurdles.
On the boys’ side, Richland Springs stacked up enough points to tie for third in the team standings.
The Coyotes were led by Brice Roesler, who won the shot put (51-3) and was fourth in the discus (148-8).
Richland Springs also its 4x200 relay finish third and its 4x400 relay take fourth.
Other standout performances Saturday included Robert Lee’s Brenner Sherwood (fifth in the pole vault), Garden City’s Miles Colunga (fifth in the 100), Bronte’s Raymond Williams (fifth in the 400), and Menard’s Colby Powell (sixth in the 200).
Gordon swept the meet by claiming the girls and boys team titles.
