SAN ANGELO, TX – The top-ranked Angelo State baseball team suffered its biggest loss of the season Thursday night, falling to Lubbock Christian 12-5 in the Lone Star Conference Championship opener at Foster Field at 1st Community Credit Union Stadium.
The loss snapped the Rams' 11-game winning streak and dropped them into the loser's bracket.
Despite the lopsided score, ASU’s Dax Dathe threw six shutout innings and left the game with a 3-0 lead before LCU improbably scored 11 runs in the eighth inning.
ASU (41-8) will face No. 2 seed UT Tyler at 1 p.m. Friday in a win-or-go-home matchup.
UT Tyler was upset by No. 3 St. Edward’s 10-7 on Thursday.
LCU and St. Edward’s will play in the winner’s bracket at 4:30 p.m. Friday.
The Rams, ranked No. 1 in the country, are still in strong position to host the NCAA DIvision II South Central Regional Tournament, but an 0-2 showing this weekend could hurt their chances.
