Sonora Assistant Pannell Named New Head Football Coach in Winters

WINTERS, TX — Winters ISD has named Ryan Pannell its new head football coach and athletic director.

Pannell worked the last two years as an assistant coach in Sonora.

Pannell was a standout quarterback at San Saba High School, where he graduated in 2012. His father, Jeff, was the head football coach during his playing days.

He went on to play football and baseball at Wayland Baptist University in Plainview.

Pannell will look to rebuild a Blizzards program that was 2-8 last year and hasn’t had a winning season since 2018, when the Blizzards went 8-4 and won their last playoff game.

Winters was coached the last 10 years by Matt McCarty, who accepted a job as the defensive coordinator at New Home.

This is the first head coach and athletic director job for Pannell.
