UT Tyler Completes Stunning Sweep of Angelo State

SAN ANGELO, TX — The Angelo State baseball team’s annual trip to the World Series has been canceled this year.

For the first time since the 2020 season was cut short due to COVID-19, the Rams won’t be advancing to Cary, North Carolina after a 10-9 loss to UT Tyler on Friday ended their season early.

Though ASU was the No. 1-ranked team in the nation in NCAA Division II, UT Tyler was ranked No. 5.

The Patriots were 2-3 against the Rams heading into this matchup, and that was before they earned a resounding 12-3 win in Game 1 on Thursday.

Game 2 was a back-and-forth battle in which ASU twice had three-run leads.

The Rams led 3-0 after the top of the first inning and 7-4 after the top of the fourth.

Each time, UT Tyler came charging back to take the lead.

ASU scored twice in the seventh to take its final lead at 9-8, but the Patriots scored in the bottom half of the inning to tie it 9-9.

UT Tyler then scored the winning run in the bottom of the ninth when Bryce Jewell singled in Drew Schmidt from third.

ASU’s season ends with a record of 48-10. UT Tyler improved to 48-11 and will represent the South Central region next week at the World Series.
