PITTSBURGH, PA — Four-time NFL MVP Aaron Rodgers is heading to the Steel City, agreeing to a one-year deal with the Pittsburgh Steelers, the team announced Thursday. The contract is pending a physical.
Rodgers is expected to arrive in Pittsburgh on Friday and take the field Tuesday when the Steelers open their mandatory minicamp.
The 41-year-old quarterback joins a roster that lacked an established starter after the Steelers waited until Day 3 of the NFL Draft to select Kansas State’s Will Howard at No. 185 overall. Pittsburgh’s quarterback room also includes Mason Rudolph and Skylar Thompson.
Rodgers, who spent the 2024 season with the New York Jets, threw for 3,897 yards, 28 touchdowns and 11 interceptions while completing 63% of his passes. His performance improved in the final 10 games, during which he passed for 2,234 yards with an 18-4 TD-INT ratio.
The Steelers, who traded for wide receiver DK Metcalf this offseason and return top tight end Pat Freiermuth, now give Rodgers a chance at redemption after a disappointing stint in New York that ended with the firing of head coach Robert Saleh and general manager Joe Douglas.
Rodgers, who has 62,952 career passing yards and 503 touchdowns, will face the Jets in Week 1 and the Green Bay Packers in Week 8 on Sunday Night Football. He effectively swaps places with Justin Fields, who was traded to the Jets earlier this offseason.
Rodgers and Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin last met in the Super Bowl in 2011, when Rodgers led Green Bay to a championship over Pittsburgh. Now, they’ll team up in search of another title.
