LUBBOCK, TX — Former Texas Tech quarterback Graham Harrell will be formally inducted into the Texas Tech Football Ring of Honor on October 25 during halftime of the Red Raiders’ home game against Oklahoma State, the university announced Tuesday.
Harrell, who led one of the most prolific offenses in college football history from 2005-08, will become the 12th member of the prestigious Ring of Honor. His name will be permanently displayed on the West Stadium Building at Jones AT&T Stadium. An induction ceremony is also planned for Oct. 24, with more details to be released later this summer.
“We are proud to celebrate not only Graham’s induction into the Ring of Honor this season but also his selection to the College Football Hall of Fame,” said Director of Athletics Kirby Hocutt. “He represents the best of the best of Texas Tech Football.”
Harrell, the 2008 Johnny Unitas Award winner and 2007 Sammy Baugh Trophy recipient, still holds several school and Big 12 records. He passed for 15,793 yards and 134 touchdowns in his career, both Texas Tech records. He also holds program records for pass attempts (2,062), completions (1,403), passing yards per game (350.9), and most 300- and 400-yard passing games.
In 2008, Harrell helped lead Texas Tech to an 11-1 regular season and a share of the Big 12 South title. He finished fourth in Heisman Trophy voting that season, one spot ahead of teammate and fellow Ring of Honor inductee Michael Crabtree.
Harrell’s achievements extended off the field as well. A three-time Academic All-Big 12 honoree, he was a finalist for the 2008 William V. Campbell Trophy and earned National Scholar-Athlete honors from the National Football Foundation. He graduated with a degree in history in 2007.
After college, Harrell signed with the CFL’s Saskatchewan Roughriders and later joined the NFL’s Green Bay Packers, earning a Super Bowl XLV ring. He has since built a coaching career with roles at North Texas, USC, West Virginia, Purdue, and is currently the offensive coordinator at Abilene Christian.
Harrell will also be inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in December, becoming the seventh Red Raider to receive the honor.
