BROOKLYN, N.Y. — As was expected from the moment they won the draft lottery in May, the Dallas Mavericks selected Cooper Flagg with the No. 1 pick in the NBA Draft on Wednesday night.
Flagg, a 6-foot-9 forward who led Duke to the Final Four last season as a freshman, was the consensus national player of the year.
He averaged 19.2 points, 7.5 rebounds and 4.2 assists per game while shooting 48.1% from the floor and 84% from the free-throw line.
Flagg is being viewed by many as a savior for the Mavericks after they traded away Luka Donic, then lost Kyrie Irving to an ACL injury.
With a core of Flagg, Anthony Davis (if he can stay healthy), Dereck Lively, Daniel Gafford, P.J. Washington, Klay Thompson and Max Christie, the Mavs could potentially contend for a playoff spot in the loaded Western Conference.
Texas actually owned the top picks in the draft as the San Antonio Spurs held the second pick.
The Spurs chose 6-6 Rutgers guard Dylan Harper, who averaged 19.4 points, 4.6 rebounds, 4 assists and 1.4 steals per game as a freshman.
Harper will join an exciting Spurs roster that includes Victor Wembenyama, De’Aaron Fox, Stephon Castle and Devin Vassell.
