2 Angelo State Baseball Players Transfer to Division I Schools

SAN ANGELO, TX — A pair of Angelo State pitchers, Dax Dathe and Ryan Free, are transferring to play for NCAA Division I colleges.

Dathe will pitch for defending national champion LSU, while Free is returning to play for Texas Tech.

Dathe was one of the nation’s top pitchers in Division II last year with 98 strikeouts in 72.1 innings. He had a 9-1 record with a 2.99 ERA and 1.16 WHIP.

Dathe was twice named first-team all-conference, and he was a first-team all-region selection in 2024.

Free pitched at Texas Tech in 2023 and ‘24 before transferring to ASU. He’ll return to Tech for one last season.

Free posted a 5-1 record last season for the Rams with a 3.44 ERA and 1.31 WHIP. He had 50 strikeouts in 49.2 innings.

Dathe and Free helped ASU spend much of last season as the No. 1-ranked team in the nation in Division II. The Rams’ season ended one round short of the College World Series with a loss to UT Tyler in Super Regionals.
