SAN ANGELO, TX — After a winless season last year, San Angelo TLCA head football coach Bradley Oh is hopeful for some improvement this fall.
TLCA was put in a tough position last year when Oh took over the program just five weeks after arriving as an assistant coach.
He also inherited a team with only eight returning starters that was moving up into Class 3A Division I and, predictably, the Eagles struggled.
TLCA is still only two years removed from a 5-6 season in 2023 that included a trip to the playoffs.
“Our goal for this year is competing,” Oh said. “Last year for us, with me taking over late in the season, I wanted to build the culture. I knew the season was going to be rough, and the season may be rough this year, but I had to change the culture the first year. This year is just getting these guys to learn how to compete and just outwork everyone.”
TLCA returns nine starters on each side of the ball from last year's young team.
Oh is a former offensive lineman, so it’s not surprising he mentioned his line first when talking about this year's group.
He said Mohammed Ndiaye (6-3, 225), Braydon Kilgore (6-3, 330) and Trey Huerta (5-10, 200) will be leading the way in the trenches.
“Very, very excited about a few people up front,” Oh said.
They’ll be blocking for sophomore quarterback Jonah Munoz.
“Very excited about what he brings to the table with his athleticism and just being able to take over the offense for me,” Oh said.
Sophomore Jackson Chacon, who earned second-team all-district honors last year as a linebacker, is slated to take over at running back.
Senior tight end Eric Heitzenrater is another player to watch for on offense.
Defensively, senior linebacker Romyn Zamora returns after a second-team all-district season to anchor that side of the ball along with Huerta and Heitzenrater.
While TLCA will again face an uphill battle in District 3-3A Division I with strong programs like Jim Ned, Sweetwater and Comanche, Oh will try to keep strengthening the foundation of his own program.
“Trust the process. Rome wasn’t built in a day,” Oh said.
TLCA will open its season Friday, Aug. 29, at home against Tahoka at Lake View Stadium.
