SAN ANGELO, TX — Earlier this month, San Angelo fisherman Stephen Sonnenberg reeled in the fourth ShareLunker of the year from Twin Buttes Reservoir.
Sonnenberg’s bass, caught on Aug. 1, weighed 8.8 pounds, qualifying it for the 8-plus pound Lunker Class as part of the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department’s Toyota ShareLunker program.
Anglers who reel in any largemouth bass at least 8 pounds or 24 inches can participate in the program.
All confirmed ShareLunker participants will receive a Catch Kit corresponding to their fish's weight class. Each Catch Kit includes an achievement decal, merchandise and other giveaways, including a chance to win a $5,000 shopping spree.
While O.H. Ivie Reservoir, about 45 miles east of San Angelo, churns out more ShareLunkers than any other body of water in the state, nearby Twin Buttes isn’t as prolific.
Sonnenber’s catch was only the fourth ShareLunker pulled from the lake in the last 12 months. The others were by Sonora’s Gunner Routh on March 9, San Angelo’s Anthony De La Cruz on May 24, and San Angelo’s Trey James on May 31.
Sonnerberg also caught an 8-pound ShareLunker from Twin Buttes on July 6, 2024, giving him two in the last 14 months.
Since 2019, Twin Buttes has produced only 19 ShareLunkers.
