SAN ANGELO, TX — The Lake View Chiefs are 4-0 for the first time since 1983, and what a way to do it.
In a back-and-forth shootout, Lake View scored the game-winning touchdown with 3:34 remaining on a 12-yard run by Chris Alvizo. Then the Chiefs' defense made a stop to preserve a wild 50-49 win over Lubbock High on Friday at San Angelo Stadium.
It was a close game all night with neither team ever leading by more than seven points.
"It's insane. We've been working so hard for this," said Lake View running back Izaiah Rios, who had 19 carries for 269 rushing yards and four touchdowns. "I give all praise to God and all praise to my boys in the locker room. ... All through the summer, we were putting in work, especially in the weight room, running our routes, doing everything we could, and it's showing right now."
Lubbock High's Bo Davis had 30 carries for 356 rushing yards and three TDs, along with a 41-yard TD catch to lead his offense.
The game was tied 28-28 at halftime, and Lubbock High held a 42-38 lead heading into the fourth quarter.
After a 59-yard punt by Lubbock High pinned Lake View on its 5-yard line, Rios broke free for a 95-yard TD romp on the very next play to give the Chiefs a 44-42 lead with 10:29 left.
"I definitely love having him on our team," Guevara said. "He played a great game. The linemen did a great job blocking for him, but he had a lot of yardage after first contact, too."
Davis responded with a 41-yard TD catch to put the Westerners back on top with 6:38 remaining before Alvizo led Lake View on a game-winning 75-yard drive, capped by his 12-yard run.
In a game that will be remembered for all of the offensive fireworks, the Chiefs' defense made a stand when it mattered most, stopping Lubbock High on downs after the Westerners reached Lake View's 32-yard line in the final minute.
"The guys never quit," Lake View head coach Hector Guevara said. "They grinded it out and played a good ball club. You guys can see that. They've got a great running back. I'm happy we stuck together and fought 'till the end."
Alvizo turned in another efficient performance directing Lake View's offense, going 19-of-25 for 274 yards and one TD with no interceptions.
Nick Leyva was the Chiefs' top receiver with six catches for 114 yards. Braylon White added five catches for 76 yards and a TD.
In addition to his huge night on offense, Rios was also 5-of-6 on extra points and kicked a 24-yard field goal.
Lubbock High QB Zach Reyna was 20-of-30 for 204 yards and one TD with no INTs. He also added two TD runs.
The Class 5A Westerners had wins over Lake View the previous two years. They fell to 1-3 and will be off next week before starting district play Oct. 3 at Amarillo Tascosa.
Lake View will look to keep its undefeated season going next week when the Chiefs host Levelland at San Angelo Stadium.
