Friday Night Roundup: Grape Creek Romps Past Stanton; Christoval Holds Off Reagan County

GRAPE CREEK, TX — The Grape Creek Eagles’ ground attack was unstoppable Friday in a 52-14 win over Stanton.

Grape Creek had 52 carries for 567 yards — an average of more than 10 yards per attempt. The Eagles also added 66 passing yards, giving them a total of 633 yards of offense.

Once again, explosive running back Darrell West led the way. He had 11 carries for 213 yards and three TDs, and he had a 15-yard TD catch. He also returned a punt 82 yards for a score.

Sire Garcia had 15 carries for 121 yards and a TD, while Anthony Saavedra gave Grape Creek a third 100-yard back with 15 carries for 100 yards, along with a 34-yard TD catch.

Quarterback Braley Woods had three carries for 88 yards.

Grape Creek’s defense also locked down Stanton, holding the Buffaloes to just 67 rushing yards and 121 passing yards.

The Eagles had three interceptions by Marco Perez, Ian Cochran and Ashton Ortiz.

Gabe Santillan had a team-high 11 tackles, while Lawson Thiers had seven tackles, including five tackles for loss. Hayden Simpson made an impact with three tackles for loss, 1.5 sacks and a forced fumble.

Grape Creek (5-3 overall, 1-1 in District 4-3A Division II) likely earned a trip to the playoffs with the win, but the Eagles still want to improve their playoff seeding. They have a huge challenge next week when they host No. 2-ranked Wall.

Stanton (1-6, 0-1) will visit Merkel next week.

Christoval Holds Off Reagan County

The Christoval Cougars put themselves in strong position to earn a playoff spot with a 30-24 win Friday at home over defending district champion Reagan County.

Christoval sophomore QB Ty DeBusk had 18 carries for 111 yards and two TDs to lead the offense. He also ran in three two-point conversions.

Haiden Davis added 14 carries for 85 yards and two TDs.

Defensively, Israel Bogs had a team-high nine tackles and three pass breakups. Colt Floyd had seven tackles, including four tackles for loss. Tony Perea had five tackles and three tackles for loss.

Christoval improved to 4-3 overall and 2-0 in District 3-2A Division I with a trip next week to Forsan.

Reagan County fell to 2-5 and 0-2 with a home game up next week against Sonora.

Miles’ Playoff Streak in Serious Jeopardy

The Miles Bulldogs lost 38-14 at home to Cross Plains on Friday, putting their playoff streak in real danger.

Miles hasn’t missed the playoffs since 2013 — a string of 11 straight trips to the postseason — but the Bulldogs are now 1-6 overall and 0-2 in District 7-2A Division II.

With a trip to 6-1 Hamlin up next, the Bulldogs could fall farther out of the race. They’ll need to get wins against Winters (2-5) and Roscoe (1-6) in the final two weeks of the regular season to keep their playoff streak alive. Both of those teams are also still looking for their first district win.

Miles was led Friday by running back Ryder Satepauhoodle, who had 24 carries for 105 yards and two TDs. He also had an interception on defense.

Jaxon Hohensee had a team-high 10 tackles, while Jaxton Bogs had nine stops.

Kaden Karmany was in at quarterback and finished 11-of-17 passing for 82 yards with an interception.

Cross Plains (3-4 overall, 1-1 in district) will host Albany next week.

Brady Blitzes Eastland

The Brady Bulldogs improved to 2-0 in district with a 70-31 rout over Eastland on Friday.

Ashton Taylor led the way with 18 carries for 132 yards and three TDs, while Alijah Stark had four carries for 106 yards and a TD. Quarterback Sean Jacoby had nine carries for 93 yards and two scores.

Johnny Roque and Emileo Godinez had TD runs, and Colby Hinton ran for a score and had a TD catch.

Demarcus Reed had 11 tackles and three tackles for loss to lead Brady’s defense. Roque had eight tackles, three tackles for loss and a sack.

Nasir Menefield had five tackles and three tackles for loss, while Stark had a tackle in the end zone for a safety.

Brady (5-2 overall, 2-0 in District 5-3A Division II) will travel to play Early next week. Eastland (0-7, 0-2) will host Dublin.
