Top 5 Football Games to Watch in West Texas This Week

SAN ANGELO, TX — Here are our top five high school football games to watch in the Concho Valley and West Texas in Week 10:

Wink at Eldorado

The Eldorado Eagles (5-3 overall, 3-0 in district) have earned themselves a shot at the District 4-2A Division II title, but they’ll have to get past one of the state’s more established programs with the Wink Wildcats (6-2, 3-0) coming to town. Wink is the defending district champ and has six straight seasons with nine or more wins. Wink dominated this matchup 55-0 last year, but it shouldn’t be so easy this time. Eldorado opened district with a 45-42 upset of Iraan to put itself in position to challenge Wink for the title. The Eagles will have to play their best game of the season to have a chance, but they shouldn’t be taken lightly, especially at home. Eldorado quarterback JonnieRae Adame has thrown for 1,430 yards and 12 touchdowns, while Garrett Walling has 37 catches for 410 yards and three TDs. Wink is led by running back Kemyd Faciane, who has 1,409 yards and 23 TDs.

The pick: Wink 42, Eldorado 21

San Angelo Lake View at Big Spring

The Lake View Chiefs (6-2 overall, 1-0 in District 3-4A Division I) will continue their pursuit of their first district title in 21 years Friday when they travel to play Big Spring (4-3, 0-1). Lake View has already clinched its first winning season since 2004 after last week’s 42-14 victory at Pecos. The Chiefs’ 6-2 record is also their best start to a season since 1996. Last week, quarterback Chris Alvizo threw for 276 yards on 22-of-26 passing, completing 17 passes in a row at one point. Izaiah Rios added 172 yards and a TD on 12 carries. Nick Leyva led a balanced receiving corps with eight catches for 100 yards. Perhaps most importantly, the Chiefs’ defense had one of its best showings of the season. Big Spring is coming off a 28-20 loss to defending district champ Andrews. The Steers beat Lake View 28-21 last year for their third straight win in this series. If the Chiefs can return home with a win, they’ll host Andrews next week for the district title. This is a big game and one Lake View is more than capable of winning.

The pick: Lake View 38, Big Spring 31

San Angelo Central at Odessa High

The Central Bobcats (4-4 overall, 1-2 in District 2-6A) have a chance to book their first trip to the playoffs since 2022 on Friday. A win against Odessa High (0-8, 0-3) will put Central in great position to earn one of the district’s four playoff spots. If there’s also a loss by Midland High against Midland Legacy, that would make it official before we even head into the final week of the regular season. Central took control of its playoff destiny last week with a 34-27 win over Midland High. The Bobcats’ rushing attack was led by Zey Johnson’s 117 yards and two TDs, while the defense allowed only 10 points in the second half to seal the win. Odessa High is winless this year and has lost every game by 18 points or more. This will be the Bronchos’ home finale, and they’ll be hungry to get a win, but this is a moment the Bobcats have been building toward, so they shouldn’t have a letdown.

The pick: Central 38, Odessa High 21

Trent at Bronte

The Bronte Longhorns (5-3 overall, 2-0 in District 6-1A Division II) can lock up the district title Friday with a win at home over Trent (6-2, 1-1). Bronte has already earned two big district wins over defending champ Blackwell (75-40) and Loraine (56-6). With a win against Trent, the Longhorns will clinch their first outright district title since 2011. Trent lost last week 56-34 to Loraine, so Bronte seems like the favorite in this matchup. Their home crowd should be charged up for one of their biggest games in years.

The pick: Bronte 62, Trent 32

Merkel at Grape Creek

The Grape Creek Eagles (5-4 overall, 1-2 in District 3-4A Division II) can throw a wrench in the playoff race with a win at home Friday over Merkel (6-2, 1-1). A victory would put the Eagles in position to move from fourth into a tie for second or third, potentially improving their playoff seeding. Grape Creek has never won a playoff trophy in its 28-year history, but this team has the ability to make school history, and playoff seeding could make a big difference. Grape Creek and Merkel have each lost to Wall and defeated Stanton in district play. The Eagles are led by running back Darrell West, while the Badgers will counter with sophomore quarterback Easton Malone. This is Grape Creek’s regular-season finale as the Eagles have a bye next week.

The pick: Grape Creek 28, Merkel 27
