SAN ANGELO, TX — Here are the biggest wins and top performers from last week’s high school football action in West Texas:
Best Game: San Angelo Central-Odessa High
The Central Bobcats didn’t want to end up in Odessa High’s closest game of the year, but that’s what happened Friday night at Ratliff Stadium in Odessa. Playing in their home finale, the Bronchos put up a strong fight and hung around until the final minute. After Odessa High scored late, Central was finally able to run out the clock on a 35-32 win that clinched the Bobcats’ first playoff berth since 2022.
Biggest Win: San Angelo Lake View
The Lake View Chiefs needed a win Friday at Big Spring to set up a district-title game with Andrews. Lake View delivered an unforgettable performance with a school record for points in a 76-49 win. Chiefs quarterback Chris Alvizo threw for 302 yards and five TDs, four of which were caught by Braylon White. Izaiah Rios ran for 155 yards and two TDs, and he returned a kickoff 90 yards for a score. Lake View now has a chance to win its first district title in 21 years Friday when it hosts Andrews at San Angelo Stadium.
Biggest Surprise: Ozona
The Ozona Lions’ perfect start continued Friday with a 46-40 win at Forsan, but it was surprising to see the score that close. Ozona had won every other game by at least 40 points, with the exception of a 14-point win over Brady in Week 3. Forsan was within 33-33 heading into the fourth quarter and made Ozona sweat until the end, though running back Christian Villarreal had a monster performance with 411 yards and five TDs on the ground. Villarreal remains on pace to break the state’s single-season rushing record of 4,045 yards. He currently has 3,269 yards and 47 TDs, putting him within 776 yards of Kenneth Hall’s mark he set for Sugar Land in 1953.
Case for the Defense: Junction
The No. 4-ranked Junction Eagles shut out La Pryor 69-0 last week to continue their defense’s exceptional play. Not counting a forfeit win over Center Point, Junction has allowed only 65 points in eight games, an average of about eight points per contest. The Eagles’ offense, meanwhile, is scoring nearly 43 points per game. Junction can complete a perfect regular season this week when it hosts Sabinal.
Strong in Defeat: Olfen
The Olfen Mustangs are still looking for the first win in their brief history as a varsity program, but they’ve quietly made some significant strides this fall. Of Olfen’s nine losses, only three of them came by way of the 45-point mercy rule. The Mustangs have also lost by 10 or less on three occasions. Olfen lost 62-25 to Loraine last week, but the Mustangs refused to be 45’d and took another game the distance.
