San Angelo Stadium to Host 2 Playoff Games Next Weekend

SAN ANGELO, TX — Two Tom Green County football teams are still alive in the playoffs, and both of them will play next weekend at San Angelo Stadium.

The No. 2-ranked Wall Hawks (13-0) will take on the Idalou Wildcats (10-3) at 6 p.m. Friday in a Class 3A Division II state quarterfinal.

It’s a rematch of a regular-season meeting, which Wall won 35-21 in Idalou. It’s the only game this season Wall hasn’t won by at least 24 points.

Wall’s defense is allowing an average of six points per game. The most points the Hawks have allowed were against Idalou, which hasn’t lost since that game. The Wildcats knocked off No. 6 Canadian last week.

The winner will advance to the state semifinals against either No. 3 Gunter (12-1) or Leonard (9-4).

In the second game at San Angelo Stadium at 5 p.m. Saturday, the Water Valley Wildcats (13-0) will meet Rankin (11-2) in another rematch in the 1A Division I state semifinals.

No. 2 Water Valley defeated Rankin 68-20 when they met in the regular season. Rankin hasn’t lost since and defeated No. 8 Borden County and No. 5 Whiteface during its playoff run.

Water Valley held off No. 6 Robert Lee 50-28 in its last game, which was also played at San Angelo Stadium.

The winner will advance to the state championship game Dec. 17 at AT&T Stadium in Arlington against either No. 1 Gordon — winners of back-to-back titles and 42 straight games — or Union Hill.
