LAS VEGAS, NEVADA — San Angelo cowboy Joel Harris got off to a strong start at the National Finals Rodeo on Thursday night with a second-place showing in the opening round of tie-down roping.
Harris roped his calf in 7.6 seconds to pocket $28,980 in prize money.
His time trailed only the 6.8 by Clovis, New Mexico’s Shad Mayfield, who earned $36,668 for his performance.
San Angelo’s other two competitors in the event — Dylan Hancock and Ty Harris — finished out of the money. Hancock tied for seventh with a time of 9.3, while Ty Harris was 13th with a 24-second showing.
Joel Harris entered this year’s NFR in 14th place out of the 15 competitors, but he vaulted all the way to sixth place after Thursday’s performance with $179,834.46.
Hancock remained in fifth place with $182,104.48. Ty Harris dropped from 11th to 12th with $147,196.54.
Denton’s Riley Webb is still the leader with $333,761.68, but Mayfield isn’t far behind with $303,977.95.
They have a commanding lead over the rest of the field as third-place Kincade Henry from Mount Pleasant has $196,718.36.
However, there’s still a long way to go. Round 2 of the 10-round NFR will take place Friday night at the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas.
