SAN ANGELO, TX — TK Taylor hit a tip-in at the buzzer Tuesday to give the San Angelo Central boys basketball team a 59-58 win over New Braunfels Canyon in the championship game of the MT Rice Tournament in Hewitt.
After the Bobcats inbounded the ball with 6.5 seconds remaining, Ean McNeill's jumper missed, but Taylor flew through the lane and tipped the ball in just before time expired.
The players and head coach Arsenio Geter mobbed Taylor in celebration after the shot.
Central improved its record to 17-4, while Canyon fell to 14-6.
Central began the year 12-0, but the Bobcats have faced some adversity with a 5-4 record since then.
However, all four losses have been by eight points or less — Hobbs (73-70), San Antonio Reagan (60-55), Midland Christian (53-50) and Waco University (57-49).
Central has two more nondistrict games before the start of District 2-6A play, beginning at 4:30 p.m. at home Tuesday, Jan. 6, against Jayton, the defending state champion and No. 1-ranked team in Class 1A.
The Bobcats will then host Killeen Ellison at 5:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 9, before opening district play at 7:30 p.m. Jan. 16 at home against Frenship.
