SAN ANGELO, TX — Angelo State Rams head football coach Jeff Girsch announced Wednesday that Jason Johnson has been named the program’s offensive coordinator.
Johnson is entering his 10th season with the Rams after spending the past nine years as the team’s wide receivers coach and recruiting coordinator. During that span, Angelo State recorded 67 wins, captured two Lone Star Conference championships and made three NCAA Division II playoff appearances.
Johnson coached 14 Lone Star Conference all-conference wide receiver selections, including Zeek Freeman and Hunter Wallis, who earned honorable mention honors in 2025. His most productive receiving corps came in 2023, when Zorhan Rideaux and Kyle Bradford were named first-team All-LSC after finishing second and fourth, respectively, in the conference in receiving yards. The duo combined for 1,113 yards and seven touchdowns that season.
Johnson will also oversee the quarterbacks as part of his new role.
He earned an associate degree from Kemper Military Institute in 1999, a bachelor’s degree in health from Western Kentucky in 2002, and a master’s degree in physical education from Sul Ross State in 2009.
The Angelo State Rams finished the 2025 season with a 6-5 overall record. Johnson should bring a fresh look to the offense moving forward.
Johnson’s coaching résumé:
2002–03: Bacone College, wide receivers
2008–09: Sul Ross State, graduate assistant (wide receivers)
2010: Kentucky State, wide receivers
2011–15: Texas State, wide receivers
2016–25: Angelo State, recruiting coordinator/wide receivers
2026–present: Angelo State, offensive coordinator/quarterbacks
