SAN ANGELO, TX — The No. 14 Wall Hawks bottled up a talented shooting San Angelo TLCA Eagles on Friday Night. After a highly contested first quarter, the Hawks showed their size and grit to down the Eagles, 71-30.
"I felt we did a good job settling in against their pressure," Wall Head Coach Parker Roberts said after the game. "We knew they could shoot the ball really well, and they were going to let it fly. So, I felt like our guys did a good job keeping them off the 3-point line."
TLCA hit several threes in the first quarter, but still trailed 19-12 headed to the second. After that, the Hawks locked in on defense. One of the bright spots after Wall's defensive adjustment was TLCA's Elias Saldona. When the Hawks locked down the 3-point line, Saldona scored multiple baskets in the lane to go along with several rebounds.
However, Wall's superior size became evident as the game progressed. The Hawks won the rebound contest and gave their offense several more opportunities for easy baskets.
The Hawks continued to build their lead throughout the second half, mainly powered by the Hawks' big men, Dylan Sellers and Jaxson Kirkland. Kirkland finished with 10 points inside to go along with Sellers' 8 points. Injured during football season, Sellers has been working through those injuries and saw some positive minutes on Friday night.
Wall's Marco Govea led all scorers on Friday with 14 points. He made four threes in the contest, including back-to-back shots in the fourth quarter to put the game away.
