NORMAN, OK — Aaliyah Chavez hasn’t taken long to become a force in the world of women’s college basketball.
The former top-ranked recruit in the nation out of Lubbock Monterey High School was named the SEC Freshman of the Week on Tuesday for the sixth time this season.
Chavez has stepped right into the starting lineup for No. 10-ranked Oklahoma and leads the Sooners with 19.1 points per game.
She helped Oklahoma upset No. 2 South Carolina last Thursday, followed by a road win over Auburn on Sunday.
The 5-foot-10 guard averaged 22 points, six assists and three rebounds during last week’s games.
Chavez is one of only five players nationally — and the only freshman — averaging at least 19 points, 4.2 assists and 3.9 rebounds per game, putting her on pace to join Hannah Hidalgo, Paige Bueckers and Clark as the only freshmen since 2009 to reach those marks.
Chavez and the Sooners return to action Thursday when they host Texas A&M at 6 p.m. on SEC Network+. Oklahoma then travels to Austin on Sunday for a Top 10 matchup with No. 4 Texas on ABC.
After leading Monterey to its first state title in 44 years last season, Chavez chose to attend Oklahoma instead of her hometown college, Texas Tech, though the Lady Raiders have fared well without her as they’re off to a 20-2 start and ranked No. 21 in the nation.
