SAN ANGELO, TX — Angelo State senior Rami Balti was named the NCAA Division II National Athlete of the Week by the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association on Monday afternoon for his outstanding performances at the New Mexico Team Open last weekend.
The Tunisian sprinter won the 400-meter dash in Albuquerque with a time of 46.68 seconds. His mark is second-best in the country and the 19th-fastest in Division II history.
Balti also served as the anchor leg on the 4x400 relay team that took top honors at the meet, crossing the line in 3:09.08. Balti's split of the relay saw him clock a 46.97.
That mark is the fifth-best in the country in that event and is fifth all-time in Division II on a record-legal track.
Balti is the first Ram to win the award in the indoor season since the award began in 2015. The Rambelles have won this award twice previously, doing so with a 4x400 relay team in 2023 and Kami Norton in 2018.
This is the first National Athlete of the Week honors for ASU track and field since former Rambelle Maricia Spence earned recognition during the outdoor season on April 8, 2024.
The Rambelles and Rams, who are ranked No. 12 in the country, are back in action next weekend at the Jarvis Scott Open, hosted by Texas Tech.
