SAN ANGELO, TX — After a 9-1 start to the season, the Angelo State University softball team has jumped all the way to No. 2 in the NCAA Division II national rankings.
The Rambelles were ranked No. 13 in the preseason poll, but they’ve leapfrogged 11 spots after only two weeks.
ASU went 5-0 on the opening weekend at the DII First Pitch Invitational in Conroe, followed by a 4-1 showing last weekend at its home tournament, the George and Ola McCorkle Challenge.
The Belles have won their games by a combined score of 71-12 with five shutouts. ASU’s only loss was a 2-0 setback against Missouri Western.
ASU trails only Auburn University at Montgomery in the national poll, followed by Cal State San Marcos, Tampa and Cal State East Bay in the top five.
Other Lone Star Conference schools in the rankings include West Texas A&M at No. 6 and Oklahoma Christian at No. 14.
Another LSC school, defending national champion UT Tyler, which began the season ranked No. 1, fell all the way out of the rankings after a 6-4 start.
ASU will put its No. 2 ranking on the line this weekend when it travels to Florida for games against Embry-Riddle, Florida Tech and Rollins College.
The Belles will begin conference play next weekend at Midwestern State and Lubbock Christian. Their next home appearance will be a 3 p.m. doubleheader Feb. 27 against Texas A&M International.
