RICHLAND SPRINGS, TX — Despite its football team reaching the state final for the first time since 2020, Richland Springs ISD has chosen to part ways with head coach and athletic director Harley Ethridge, according to Big Country Blitz.
Ethridge led the Coyotes to a 12-2 record and a runner-up finish after falling to Jayton in the Class 1A Division II state final.
It was Ethridge’s first season at the helm for Richland Springs, but he has been an integral part of the program on and off for more than 20 years.
He was the offensive coordinator for Richland Springs when its dynasty began with the first state title back in 2004, and he was an assistant at the school for other state-title runs.
After other coaching stints, including a state-final run as the head coach at Follett, he returned to Richland Springs in 2022.
Ethridge’s son, Tyler, was a legendary spread back for the Coyotes when they won their first three state titles. Another son, Cohen, led last year’s team.
With Cohen’s senior season ahead of him next fall, it’s unclear where the Ethridges will be for the 2026 season.
Richland Springs principal Roger Roesler addressed staffing changes in a recent Facebook post.
“As principal of Richland Springs ISD, I want to personally address recent conversations regarding staffing changes within our district. Due to budget challenges, we have implemented a reduction in force and made several difficult staffing decisions. These actions were taken locally and proactively to ensure the long-term financial stability of our school.
“While these decisions were not easy, they have positioned our district in the strongest financial condition we have experienced in several years. Moving forward, we are secure, stable, and focused on continuing to provide an excellent education for our students.
“I am incredibly proud of our teachers and staff. They are dedicated professionals who care deeply about our students and their success. Every member of our team is fully committed to ensuring that all students continue to receive high-quality instruction and the support they need to be successful in their future endeavors.
“I also want to clearly address rumors: our school is not closing, and the Texas Education Agency is not taking over the district. These claims are simply not true. The steps taken were responsible, local decisions made to protect the future of our school and community.
“Thank you for your continued support of our students, staff, and Richland Springs ISD. My door is always open for any questions regarding the safety, security, and success of our students and the school.”
