SAN ANGELO, TX — The No. 11 Angelo State baseball team returned home Friday night and defeated Oklahoma Christian 12-1 in a run-rule victory to open a four-game series at Foster Field at 1st Community Credit Union Stadium.
The Rams improved to 8-3 overall and in Lone Star Conference play.
After a scoreless first inning, Angelo State scored four runs in the second. Chase Pendley crossed the plate on a wild pitch, and Blake Wilhoite followed with a two-run double to right-center field. Austin Beck added an RBI single to extend the lead.
The Rams added three runs in the fourth inning. Cooper Knight drove in a run on a groundout, while Beck and Brett Smajstrla each recorded RBI singles.
Oklahoma Christian scored its only run in the fifth inning, but Angelo State responded with five runs in the bottom half. Beck highlighted the inning with a two-run double to left field and finished with four RBIs.
Josh Reed earned the win in his fourth consecutive Friday start, improving to 4-0. He pitched five innings, allowing one earned run on five hits and two walks while striking out six, including three straight batters to end the second inning.
Angelo State added another run in the sixth on a bases-loaded walk drawn by Chris Bernal, and David Dressendorfer pitched the final two innings in relief to close the game.
The teams continue the series Saturday with a doubleheader. Angelo State will host Military Appreciation Day, with the Frog-X Parachute Team scheduled to land on the field between games. Active-duty military personnel, veterans, retirees and their dependents will receive free admission with valid military identification.
