SAN ANTONIO, TX — The No. 18-ranked Angelo State University baseball team scored four runs over the final two innings to defeat No. 23 St. Mary's 5-2 in 10 innings Sunday in San Antonio, completing a four-game series sweep.
The Rams improved to 14-4 and moved into a tie atop the Lone Star Conference standings.
Trailing 3-2 entering the ninth inning, ASU tied the game after Austin Beck and Chase Pendley opened the frame with back-to-back singles, followed by Payton Bush bunting Beck home from third.
In the 10th, Blake Wilhoite and Beck each came through with two-out singles, and Pendley hit an RBI single for a 3-2 lead. Bush and Brett Smajstrla then added RBI singles to extend the advantage to 5-2.
Pitcher Garett Baumann, who came on in the sixth inning, pitched five shutout innings to help the Rams rally for the win.
Chance Douglas started for the Rams and pitched 4 2/3 innings, allowing two runs on four hits and one walk while striking out two. Garrett Villa pitched the last 1/3 of the fifth inning and forced a lineout.
ASU returns home to Foster Field at 1st Community Credit Union Stadium at 6:30 p.m. Friday, March 6, to open a two-week homestand that begins against Lubbock Christian.
