SAN ANGELO, TX — Several Concho Valley schools are sending athletes to the boys state powerlifting meet after a successful showing at regionals.
Grape Creek had two regional champions, Kayden Carpenter and Lorenzo Longoria, which helped the Eagles take third place at their regional meet.
Carpenter won the 220-pound class with a squat of 585 pounds, a bench of 460 and a deadlift of 530 for a total of 1,575 pounds.
Only three people at the meet in any class lifted more total weight.
Longoria won the super heavyweight class with lifts of 525 on squat, 405 on bench and 505 on deadlift for a total of 1,435 pounds.
San Saba also had a third-place showing at its regional meet, led by two regional champs — Christopher Vega in the 114-pound class (320-205-340 — 865) and Neri Gonzales in the 123 class (380-225-420 — 1,025) — along with runner-up Anthony Garcia in the 148 class (425-265-455 — 1,145).
Ballinger was fourth at the same regional meet on the strength of Treyven Lopez winning the 132 class (430-295-400 — 1,125) and Josh Martinez taking second in the 242 class (560-350-540 — 1,450).
Colorado City was fifth, led by Aiden Wooddell winning the 275 class (565-365-480 — 1,410), and Anthony Davis taking runner-up in the 123 class (315-205-285 — 805).
Miles had a runner-up in Ryder Satepauhoodle in the 165 class (495-305-515 — 1,315), while Coleman had a runner-up performance by Gio Villanueva in the 181 class (470-360-475 — 1,305).
Ozona was fourth at its regional meet with a win by Matt Ybarra in the 242 class (520-330-540 — 1,390) and a runner-up showing by Darrius Galindo in the super heavyweight class (700-430-450 — 1,580).
Sonora was seventh, led by a win from Axel Botello in the 220 class (605-420-470 — 1,495) and a second-place performance by Acea Gomez in the 165 class (500-300-465 — 1,265).
Reagan County also had a regional champion after Andrew Lopez won the 198 class (465-310-470 — 1,245), and a runner-up, Rodrigo Bernal, in the 242 class (580-375-490 — 1,445).
As reported Monday, San Angelo Lake View is sending four athletes to state after winning its regional meet. James Hogeda won the 275 class (425-670-635 — 1,730) and Ethan Packard won the 132 class (320-550-460 — 1,330). Connor Williams was the runner-up in the 220 class (270-660-545 — 1,475) and Joshua Lemos was the runner-up in the 181 class (405-505-500 — 1,410).
The boys state powerlifting meet will be held March 27-28 at the Taylor County Expo Center in Abilene.
