STEPHENVILLE, TX — The Brownwood Lions soccer team has advanced to the next round in the playoffs after beating the Godley Wildcats, 1-0.
A couple weeks ago, Brownwood secured an outright district championship when it went to a shootout against district rival Stephenville. On Friday, March 20, the Lions beat Godley in a chippy bi-district matchup. The game was tied at 0-0 for much of the game even though both teams possessed the ball and were taking shots.
It wasn’t until about five minutes left in the game when Brownwood’s Aiden Jimenez scored a goal to finally get on the board. Brownwood held on for the closing minutes and is now moving on to the area round where the Lions will play Lake Worth in Godley on Tuesday, March 24.
One reason the Lions have been so good this year is due to Hudson Fry at goalie. Only a sophomore, Fry also started as a freshman. This season, he has only given up 11 goals all season and four in district.
Offensively, Brownwood has scored 40 goals this year on its way to a 12-1-2 overall record and a perfect 8-0 in district.
