Lake View Boys Basketball Coach Bliskey Steps Down

SAN ANGELO, TX — The Lake View Chiefs will have a new boys’ basketball coach next season.

Courtney Bliskey, who was the head basketball coach at Lake View High School, has stepped down from the position, according to San Angelo ISD athletic director Rodney Chant.

Bliskey led the Chiefs to a 24-13 record this past season, which was the team's winningest campaign in years, though they were knocked out in the first round of the playoffs.

In 2025, Bliskey guided Lake View to its first playoff win in 26 years with a first-round upset over Stephenville.

Bliskey had overseen the program since 2016, when he inherited a long-struggling team coming off a 3-21 season and immediately helped them to a 15-18 record his first year.

He was also an assistant for the team from 2011-15.

Despite the recent highs the program reached, Bliskey had an overall record of 116-208 as the Chiefs' head coach. Some Lake View parents and supporters were not happy with the direction of the program and started a petition to have Bliskey replaced.

San Angelo LIVE! received from a concerned parent that included the petition:

"We, the undersigned supporters, parents, and alumni, are writing to express our deep concern regarding the current trajectory of San Angelo Lake View basketball team. Despite high hopes for the current and past seasons, the team has shown a consistent lack of strategic direction, player development, and ultimately, success under Head Coach Courtney Bliskey.

"To restore competitiveness and morale, we respectfully urge San Angelo Independent School District Administration and Athletic Department to initiate a search for new coaching leadership immediately.

"Coach Bliskey has had poor results in the seasons he has served as Lake View head coach for boys’ basketball. The overall record under Bliskey stands at approximately 30% and 1-8 in the playoffs.

"Players have expressed concerns regarding favoritism, bullying, hazing, and unprofessional quitting during more challenging games. Over the past 3 seasons, teams have suffered from a lack of accountability, poor communication, and questionable decision-making. We have lost confidence in the leadership’s ability to lead this program effectively. We deserve a coach who embodies integrity, respect, and professional standards.

"More specific, documented instances of failure, such as losing streaks against rivals, failure to develop talent, specific, and non-confidential safety issues. Bliskey establishes rules for the basketball program in which he fails to abide by when he displays favoritism towards players or families in which he holds personal relationships with.

"Coach Bliskey has been accused of constant text messaging with parents who help him determine who will play. Ethical violations should not be tolerated or accepted.

"Lake View is in dire requirement for structural change as this has had a negative impact on the student athlete well-being. The community urges SAISD and management to take decisive action. SAISD must uphold the values of the institution. A change at the head coach position could inject fresh ideas and provide the strategic foresight and motivational leadership that the team desperately needs."

This petition was signed by over 50 supporters of the issue.

In a response, Chant confirmed that Bliskey stepped down from his role as the head boys’ basketball coach before Spring Break.

Last season, Lake View went 24-13 overall and earned third place in District 5-4A with a record of 7-5. The Chiefs outscored their opponents by an average score of 60-49.

Lake View's season was also highlighted by a run to the championship game of the Doug McCutchen Tournament, where the Chiefs lost to crosstown rival Central.

Freshman Andrew Young, who was the runner-up for the district's Newcomer of the Year, is among the Chiefs' returners for next season, along with junior Chris Alvizo and sophomore Luke Barron.
