AUSTIN, TX — Former Coahoma standout Hannah Wells was named the Southeastern Conference's Freshman of the Week on Tuesday. It's the first weekly honor of Wells' career.
Wells, a two-way player for the No. 1-ranked Longhorns, has played an integral role in Texas (26-1) winning a program-best 26 consecutive games as it looks to defend its national title.
In two starts against Baylor last week, Wells was 2-for-4 at the plate with a home run and three RBIs. It was her sixth HR of the season. In the pitcher’s circle, she threw four innings of one-run ball while allowing four hits. She struck out two and walked none to improve to 4-1 on the year.
Last year, Wells helped Class 3A Division II Coahoma become the first school in Texas to win three straight softball state titles.
She had a .602 batting average with a nation-leading 31 home runs, and she was 22-1 as a pitcher with a 0.49 ERA, 258 strikeouts in 127.2 innings and an opponent’s batting average of .112.
Wells and Texas travel to San Marcos to play Texas State at 6 p.m. Wednesday on ESPN+. Texas will then host No. 15 Texas A&M on Friday-Sunday.
