CHICAGO, IL — Former San Angelo Central star Davis Martin will head into his fourth season in the major leagues next week as the No. 4 starting pitcher for the Chicago White Sox.
Martin is coming off his best season in the majors since he was drafted out of Texas Tech in 2018. Last year, he posted a 4.10 ERA over 142 ⅔ innings, though he was sidelined for about a month with a forearm injury.
One of his better performances came against the Texas Rangers when he allowed only four hits in six innings.
Unfortunately for Martin, the White Sox had the second-worst record in the league last season at 60-102.
Chicago’s season begins this year Thursday, March 26, at Milwaukee. Martin’s first game will be at 5:40 p.m. Monday, March 30, at Miami.
Martin has had a strong spring training in which he’s allowed only nine hits in 16.2 innings. In wins over Seattle and the Chicago Cubs, he allowed just two combined hits in seven innings with eight strikeouts and one walk.
Martin is joined in the starting rotation by Shane Smith, Sean Burke, Anthony Kay and Erick Fedde.
Martin and the White Sox will visit the Lone Star State twice this season — at Texas on July 20-22 and at Houston on Aug. 31-Sept. 3.
As a senior at San Angelo Central in 2015, Martin led the Bobcats to the regional quarterfinals for the first time in program history. He went 9-1 with a 0.29 ERA and 116 strikeouts.
After helping Texas Tech reach the College World Series, Martin debuted in the majors in 2022 but had to sit out all of 2023 due to Tommy John surgery. He returned in 2024 as a relief pitcher before his breakout season last year.
He joins David Hulse and Trey Lunsford as the only former Central players to reach the majors.
