ABILENE, TX — San Angelo Lake View senior James Hogeda won the state title Friday in the 275-pound weight class at the Division II state powerlifting meet at the Taylor County Expo Center in Abilene.
Hogeda lifted 715 pounds in the squat, 435 in the bench press and 620 in the deadlift for a total of 1,770 pounds.
He needed every bit of weight he lifted to clip San Antonio Memorial’s John Elizondo for the title by just five pounds.
Lake View’s Ethan Packard was second place in the 132-pound class, highlighted by a state record in his class of 585 pounds in the squat. Packard also benched 300 and deadlift 455 for a total of 1,340 pounds.
Hogeda and Packard’s performances earned the Chiefs 12 points, which gave them a fourth-place finish in the team standings. They were only three points behind Robstown for the team title.
Lake View had two other state qualifiers — Josh Lemos, who was 12th in the 181-pound class (510-410-510 — 1,430) and Conner Williams, who was 18th in the 220-pound class (600-315-545 — 1,460).
