Big Spring Football Coach McWilliams Accepts Job at Crane

CRANE, TX — Big Spring head football coach and athletic director Cannon McWilliams is leaving the school to accept the same roles at Crane.

McWilliams had led Big Spring’s program since 2019 and compiled a 31-43 record. The Steers were 5-5 last season.

Big Spring, which has competed in Class 4A Division I and was a district rival of San Angelo Lake View, is dropping to 4A D-II next school year. Crane is a 3A D-II school.

McWilliams, a former standout quarterback at McCamey, will now be just 20 miles up the road from his alma mater.

Crane’s job had been vacant since Robert Ontiveros stepped down in February after two seasons. The Golden Cranes were 6-5 last year and lost in the first round of the playoffs.

Crane will be in a district next season with Grape Creek, Stanton, Alpine, Anthony and Coahoma.

McWilliams was previously the head boys basketball coach at Sonora. He has also been an assistant coach at Andrews, Bellville, Muleshoe and Irion County.

McWilliams earned his bachelor’s degree from UT Permian Basin in Odessa and his master’s degree from Sul Ross State in Alpine.
