San Angelo Central Qualifies Numerous Athletes for Area Track Meet

 

SAN ANGELO, TX — San Angelo Central hosted the District 2-6A Track and Field Championships on Thursday and sent numerous athletes on to the area meet.

The Lady Cats had a second-place finish in the team standings with 126 points, which was 17 behind district champion Midland Legacy.

The top four finishers in each event advanced to the area meet, which will be held April 17 at El Paso Franklin.

The Central girls’ 4x400-meter relay took first place with a time of 3 minutes, 55.86 seconds. The relay members are Sophie Hernandez, Emauri Vinson, Serena Cucuta and Madison Rios.

The Lady Cats also had a district title from Sydney Crooks, who won the triple jump with a hop, skip and a jump of 38 feet, 4.5 inches.

Crooks added a fourth-place showing in the high jump (5-0) and a fifth-place finish in the long jump.

Cucuta also had a strong day with second-place finishes in the triple jump (37-11) and long jump (17-10). She was part of a 4x100 relay that was second place in 49.10 and a 4x200 relay that was second in 1:44.19.

The other members of the 4x100 relay were Jaida Ennis, Gracen Coates and Madison Rios. The other members of the 4x200 relay were Aalyah Ramirez, Jocelyn Ruiz and Rios.

Jayla Elliott was second in the 100 hurdles in 15.94.

Sophie Hernandez had a pair of bronze-medal showings with third-place finishes in the 800 (2:22.38) and 400 (1:00.77).

Coates was third in the 300 hurdles (47.51), and Vinson was third in the 200 (26.07).

Emma-Claire Beers was fourth in the 3200 (12:59.54).

On the boys’ side, the Bobcats were fifth in the team standings with 78 points. Midland Legacy ran away with the title with 193 points, which was 94 points ahead of runner-up Odessa Permian.

Sebastian Gonzalez highlighted the Bobcats’ day with a district-title win in the 800 in a time of 1:58.18. He was also fifth in the 1600 in 4:36.01.

John Morales was second in the 3200 (10:03.66) and fourth in the 800 (2:02.10).

Trey Steele was second in the pole vault (15-0).

Solomone Ma’afu was second in the discus (147-09), while Parker Havercroft was fourth (139-0).

Aiden Garcia was third in the 3200 (10:24.32) and fourth in the 1600 (4:32.20).

The Bobcats’ 4x400 relay was fourth in 3:28.19. The team members are Noah Hogeda, Jayden Martinez, Dereon McDuffie and Colt Martin.
