WALL, TX — The Wall Hawks lit up the scoreboard with 19 runs Friday against Class 5A Abilene High, but it still wasn’t enough in a 22-19 slugfest loss that snapped Wall’s 16-game winning streak.
Wall, which is ranked No. 5 in Class 3A, led 11-1 after the second inning and appeared to be on the way to a decisive win.
Abilene came roaring back, however, with four runs in the third inning and 10 in the fourth to take a 15-11 lead.
Wall answered with eight runs in the fifth to retake the lead at 19-15.
Against all odds, Abilene managed to shut out Wall the rest of the way.
The Eagles scored three times in the sixth and once in the seventh to send the game into extra innings.
Abilene then finished off the crazy win with three runs in the eighth inning.
Reid Ballard led Wall at the plate, going 4-for-5 with a home run, double and three RBIs.
Four Hawks had three-hit games. Tyler Klinesmith was 3-for-3 with a double and two stolen bases. Kellan Oliver was 3-for-5 with a double and three RBIs. Jack Jeys was 3-for-5 with a HR and three RBIs, and Hagyn Barbee was 3-for-5 with three RBIs and two SBs.
Lawson Dankworth was 2-for-4 with three RBIs and a SB.
Wall fell to 20-9, while Abilene improved to 15-9.
The Hawks will try to refocus and prepare for a gigantic matchup against No. 1-ranked Jim Ned at 7 p.m. Friday, April 17, in Wall. The two District 6-3A leaders will play again at 7 p.m. Tuesday, April 21, in Tuscola, to close out the district schedule.
