San Angelo Central Gymnastics Teams Sweep Regional Titles

SAN ANGELO, TX — The San Angelo Central gymnastics teams swept the regional titles Saturday.

It was the 25th consecutive regional title for the Lady Cats, who are the seven-time defending state champions.

However, it was the Bobcats who had the biggest win — 316.75 to 295.5 over runner-up Odessa High — along with the all-around champion, Carson Edwards.

Edwards claimed individual titles in the pommel horse, rings, parallel bars and horizontal bar on the way to racking up 109.1 points. He was also second in the floor exercise and fourth on the vault.

Central’s Brady Stewart was second in the all-around, while Nic Atchison was third and Ayden Freeman was seventh.

Stewart was second in the rings and vault, third in the floor, fourth in the parallel bars and horizontal bar, and eighth on the pommel horse.

Atchison was third in the rings, vault and horizontal bar, fifth in the pommel horse and parallel bars, and seventh in the floor.

Freeman had sixth-place showings in the horizontal bar, rings and pommel horse.

Cadyn Stuard was third on the pommel horse and fourth on the rings.

The only events that Edwards didn’t win — floor and vault — were claimed by Odessa Permian’s Tristan Rico.

The Central girls defeated Abilene Wylie 227.15 to 223.8 for the team title.

The Lady Cats won every event, but they didn’t have the all-around champion as El Paso Bel Air’s Abigayle Gonzalez clipped Central’s Steely Young for the title, 75.65 to 75.4.

Young won the balance beam, tied for second in the floor, was fourth on vault and sixth on uneven bars.

Central’s Allison Garnett won the uneven bars and floor, while tying for fifth on vault and placing ninth on the balance beam. She finished third in the all-around standings.

Central’s Ava Bedard, who was fifth in the all-around, won the vault and was fourth on the uneven bars.

Other highlights for Central included Serena Lopez tying for second in floor and placing third on the balance beam, Mila Morrison taking seventh in uneven bars, Michal Mock placing seventh on vault, and Isabella Negovetich finishing eighth on floor.

The state meet will be April 24-25 at Odessa Permian High School.
