Former Central Star Martin Leads White Sox to Another Win

CHICAGO, IL — The season is young, but former San Angelo Central standout Davis Martin has emerged as one of Major League Baseball’s top pitchers so far this year.

Martin had another strong performance Wednesday to lead the Chicago White Sox to a 5-2 win over the Los Angeles Angels.

Martin allowed one run and seven hits in 5.2 innings of work while striking out seven and walking one.

It was the fourth win of the season for Martin (4-1), who is tied for fifth in the league in wins.

Martin also ranks in the top 10 in other categories. His 1.95 earned run average is No. 8, he’s tied for fifth with five quality starts, and he’s tied for third in wins above replacement at 1.8.

The 29-year-old Martin, who graduated from Central in 2015, had only 10 career wins in 44 starts entering this season while playing for one of the league’s worst teams.

The White Sox have made strides this year and are off to a 13-17 record while Martin is enjoying the best season of his career, winning four of his first six starts.

Martin will look to keep it going Monday when he visits Los Angeles for a rematch with the Angels at 8:38 p.m.

Martin and the White Sox will be in Arlington from July 20-22 when they play the Texas Rangers.
