No. 12 Angelo State Opens LSC Championships with a Run-Rule Victory

 

SAN ANGELO, TX — The No. 12 Angelo State Rams baseball opened Lone Star Conference Championship play with a 14-4 run-rule victory over Texas A&M-Kingsville Javelinas baseball on Saturday at Foster Field at 1st Community Credit Union Stadium.

With the win, Angelo State improved to 37-14 overall and 18-10 at home, extending its winning streak to 10 games.

The Rams struck early, scoring in the first inning on a double steal by Austin Beck and Blake Wilhoite. Their aggressive approach on the basepaths continued throughout the game, as they set a program record with 13 stolen bases.

Angelo State broke the game open with a six-run second inning. Tate Greene drove in a run with a single, while Jordan Kelly and Gam Jones each added RBIs. Payton Bush capped the rally with an RBI single, and Greene added another RBI hit to give the Rams a 7-0 lead.

Texas A&M-Kingsville got on the board in the fourth, but Angelo State answered with Bush delivering a two-run sacrifice fly to extend the lead.

Luke Spencer earned the win after allowing one run on three hits over five innings, striking out two to improve to 4-0 on the season.

The Rams added five more runs in the sixth inning. Bush recorded his fourth RBI of the game, while Hunter Holt and Chris Bernal each drove in runs. Greene finished with a team-high five RBIs.

The Javelinas scored twice in the seventh, but David Dressendorfer closed the game with a strikeout to secure the run-rule victory.

Angelo State will look to clinch the best-of-three series Sunday, with first pitch set for 3 p.m. in San Angelo.
