ABILENE, TX — Coahoma sophomore Kohen Grantom set the national record in the 400-meter wheelchair race Saturday at the Class 3A Region I track and field meet at Abilene Christian University’s Elmer Gray Stadium.
Grantom clocked a time of 50.7 seconds to set a new standard in the event.
Grantom burst onto the track and field scene last year when he won two gold medals and a silver medal at the UIL State Track and Field Meet.
He had a time of 15.92 seconds to win the 100-meter race, followed by a time of 55.92 to win the 400. He was also second in the shot put.
He has continued to push the limits this year. Last month at the area track meet, he had times of 15.31 in the 100 and 51.96 in the 400 — both faster than any time ever recorded at the state meet, eclipsing the marks set by Gunter’s Tyler Buysse in 2017.
He topped both those marks again Saturday, including a time of 15.13 in the 100-meter race. He also threw 27 feet, 3 inches in the shot put.
In December, Grantom was named to the 2025 USA Para High School All-American Team. He was one of only 45 athletes nationwide selected by U.S. Track & Field for the honor.
Grantom will compete at the state meet May 15 at Mike A. Myers Stadium in Austin.
