Angelo State Men, Women 2nd After Day 1 of LSC Track Meet

 

CANYON TX — The Angelo State track and field teams wrapped up Day 1 of competition at the Lone Star Conference Championships in second place Thursday.

The Rams and Rambelles have claimed two individual championships with Jonathan Wright winning the men’s pole vault with a mark of 17 feet (5.18 meters), while Marie Schuler won the women’s hammer with a throw of 197-1 (60.07 meters).

Esma Pajt made it a 1-2 finish in the hammer with a personal-best mark of 182-07 (55.67 meters).

Kobi Valchar (175-11; 53.63 meters) finished second in the men’s hammer with a personal record, and Luis Campos-Mendoza finished fourth (170-3; 51.90 meters).

In the heptathlon, Abril Okon finished Day 1 in second place, only 149 points off the lead. Okon finished second in the 100-meter hurdles and the high jump – recording a provisional-qualifying jump in the latter with a mark of 5-7.25 (1.71 meters).

Gracie Stephens sits in fourth place in the heptathlon after a second-place finish in the shot put, and Kylie Frush is in fifth after ending the day with a win in the 200 meters.

In preliminary heats on the track, Lainey Jernigan and Kaylee Price advanced to the finals in the women’s 100 meters, and Kinlee Lawlis qualified for the finals in the women’s 200.

For the Rams, William OpareFrancis Patanpatan and Jahleel Armstrong advanced to the finals in the 200.

ASU resumes competition Friday and will conclude the meet Saturday.
