WINK, TX — A former West Texas quarterback who played at the smallest level of 11-man football is moving up to the NCAA Division I ranks.
Kanon Gibson, who played for the Wink Wildcats from 2019 to 2022, is transferring from Division II UT Permian Basin to Abilene Christian University.
Gibson initially played at West Texas A&M but then transferred to UTPB. Last season, Gibson had 3,990 yards, 31 passing touchdowns to 10 interceptions, and added 534 yards and 13 scores on the ground.
In 2025, Gibson was named a team captain at UTPB and holds seven school records. In his one season as the starter, Gibson had 12 games with multiple touchdowns during the 14-game season.
As a four-year starter at Wink, Gibson had 13,164 total yards and 148 total TDs.
Gibson will have competition that the Concho Valley will know in former Midland Lee quarterback Marcos Davila, who started off at Purdue before transferring to Nebraska then finally to ACU.
ACU has put out some talent at quarterback in the past going as far back as 1974 when former Dallas Cowboy quarterback Clink Longley played for the Wildcats. ACU also recently had former San Angelo Central standout Maverick McIvor and Lake View QB John David Baker play for them.
